A team behind a 300-year-old community sports game has donated £8,000 to us, after making us its chosen charity for 2022.
Workington Uppies and Downies, based in Cumbria, is a tradition which started hundreds of years ago and sees two teams, (Uppies and Downies, depending on their side of town) try to get the ball back to their end.
Each year, members raise money for a nominated charity and this year, they chose us.
Members planned everything from bucket collections to a chest wax and a sponsored fire engine pull to raise money – with people from across the area taking part in support of us and the people we help.
And alongside the team throughout has been Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, which helped with some of the activities along the way.
Paul Milburn, a Group Manager with Cumbria FRS and our Service Coordinator for the area, was one of those helping out and says: “Cumbria FRS put on several events to assist the Uppies and Downies in raising money, while the Uppies and Downies fundraising team also held a charity chest wax, a psychic medium night, an appliance pull and a bucket collection at Tesco to raise the funds.
“Elvin, Lynda and David, the fundraising organisers, had a guided tour of Jubilee House on Tuesday 5th July too, and were very impressed with what the Charity had to offer to help rehabilitate injured firefighters.
“Cumbria FRS and The Fire Fighters Charity would like to thank the team for raising such an amazing amount, the money will directly help so many injured firefighters in their rehabilitation.”
Organiser Elvin Jarvis says: “It was a pleasure organising the event this year in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity. We were able to visit Jubilee House to see some of the work that goes on to help fire and rescue personnel, and it was absolutely amazing. It’s clear how far these donations go.”
From everyone here, a huge thank you to the Uppies and Downies team and all those that supported them – these funds will make such a difference.
