On-call firefighters are there for us everyday, ready to run to danger at a moment’s notice – day and night.
But juggling that demanding work with a day job, a family and normal life can bring with it a lot of pressures too.
To understand how one crew manages that pressure, and how they look after each other, we sat down with four Scottish firefighters – based at Pitlochry Fire Station – to hear about their own experiences and how they manage their mental wellbeing.
In the podcast, Struan, Greg, Michael and Martin discuss the importance of “breaking down male pride”, some of their experiences of balancing family commitments with the job, their concerns at being called out to a family member or friend in their small community, and the power of talking and reaching out for support when you need it.
