A team of 23 firefighters from Gloucestershire FRS will take on this year’s British Firefighter Challenge in aid of us – and they’ve already raised over £2,000.
Teams from across the world compete in the event each year, taking on stair ascents, fire hose drags, ‘casualty’ rescues, lifts and more across two days.
This year’s event will take place in Liverpool on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July.
Crew Manager Amy Lynex has taken part over the last four to five years and is one of the 23-strong team from Gloucestershire this year.
She says: “This event is incredibly hard but there’s something about the whole thing which is really fun too! It’s the sort of challenges we can face on the job – but packed into two days, so it’s incredibly tough.
“The events always take place in a city centre so it’s great for the public to see what we do, and how challenging it can be.
“We’ve been first and second in a few categories, and last year we were the fastest fire service overall, so there’s a lot of pressure on this year. We’re also proud to have been awarded for our fundraising success over the last two years, for the Fire Fighters Charity. I believe our total for each year we have competed combined stands at over £7,000 now.
“A few of our team members, including Luke Kavanagh, have had support from the charity, so we know first-hand the difference these funds can make.”
The team have organised specific Car Washes, as well as fundraising at an Open Day and running a prize draw this year. To donate to them, click here:
The British Firefighter Challenge is open to all operational and retired firefighters. It was initially organised to promote the benefits of exercise on firefighters’ overall health, while also showcasing the huge demands of their day-to-day job for spectators.
