Helen’s Story
“Every Christmas we thank our stars for the Fire Fighters Charity”
Christmas is a time for loved ones to come together in celebration and, like most families, it’s always been one of our happiest times of the year. For the last five years, however, my beloved partner Paul has been missing from the festivities. It’s thanks to Fire Fighters Charity that our family has stayed strong for each other since, making plans for the best Christmas we can have.
Paul worked for Kent Fire and Rescue Service for 17 years. That’s where we met, as I was a firefighter too. We planned to spend the rest of our lives together.
But all those dreams were shattered abruptly five years ago
Paul was assaulted on a night out, causing a severe brain injury. Five years on, Paul can’t speak, swallow or hug his children. We don’t even know if he understands any of his outside world. He lives in a care home and it’s unlikely his condition will ever improve.
That’s when Fire Fighters Charity came into our lives
Fire Fighters Charity has been the most amazing support network ever since, for me and most importantly for our three children. The charity’s amazing Welfare Team provided travel and accommodation close to the hospital in those first awful weeks. It was a very uncertain time financially, so their shopping vouchers were a huge help too.

We’ve had counselling sessions, so we can be strong for each other. and visited Harcombe House, their centre in Devon, on Child and Family Weeks, where we can relax and meet other families – some of whom have become lifelong friends.
The fire family is truly amazing
For me though, it’s just knowing the charity is always there. And none of that would be possible without donations from its supporters. Please, give what you can, today, so more families like mine can overcome challenging times and enjoy the best Christmas we can.
With festive wishes,
Helen
