Application Stage
- Your curriculum vitae (CV) is a key tool for helping us to shortlist applicants for interview; therefore as an important part in the selection process it is vital that you take the time to complete it as fully and as accurately as possible.
- To ensure fairness to all applicants, any decision to shortlist for interview is based solely upon the information you supply within your CV.
- Make sure the information you provide is relevant to your application and tell us specifically why you wish to apply for the vacancy and what makes you a suitable applicant.
- All applications will be acknowledged.
Tips on your application
- All vacancies at The Fire Fighters Charity are advertised with a full job description and person specification:
– The job description sets out the purpose and outcomes.
– The person specification sets out the knowledge, skills and experience we are looking for in the successful candidate. - The shortlisting panel will be looking for evidence of how you meet criteria on the person specification; make sure you address each of the criteria and provide full but concise examples of how you meet these.
- Provide examples of how you have demonstrated the particular skill by describing a real-life situation you have been in.
- If you can’t think of an example from a current or previous job, think about how you’ve demonstrated a particular skill in another area of your experience, e.g. through voluntary work or in education.
Shortlisting
- Shortlisting will take place asap after the closing date.
- The shortlisting panel will review the applications against the key shortlisting criteria. If an applicant has not demonstrated how they meet the criteria, they are unlikely to be shortlisted.
- Applicants not contacted within 2 weeks of the closing date should assume they have been unsuccessful.
The Selection Process
- We try, wherever possible, to indicate within the advert the date when interviews will be held to enable applicants to plan ahead. If you are shortlisted we will normally contact you by telephone or email to invite you to interview.
- We will give full details of what the selection process will involve. This may include carrying out a selection exercise e.g. demonstrate a technique or undertake a presentation, to test out your ability to carry out specific requirements of the role for which you have applied.
- If you have a disability and need any adjustments to be made in order for you to participate in the selection process, please contact the Human Resources team immediately on receipt of your invite to interview to discuss this so we can accommodate your needs.
- In some instances it may be necessary to hold the selection process in two stages and candidates may be called back for a second interview.
- The interview panel will assess and score candidates interview responses (and other assessment criteria, where applicable) against the relevant criteria. If more than one candidate meets all the criteria, the scores will be used to rank the candidates.
